Adding Emojis to Discord
How to Install Custom Emojis in Discord
Adding custom emojis to a Discord server is a fun way to personalize your community. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to upload and install custom emojis in your Discord server:
Prerequisites:
You need to have Manage Emojis and Stickers permission in the server.
Your emoji files must be 128x128 pixels (Discord will resize them) and can be in PNG, JPG, or GIF formats.
A maximum of 50 static or animated emojis is allowed per server by default (can increase with higher server boosts).
Step 1: Prepare Your Custom Emoji
Create/Download the Emoji: Make sure the image you want to use is in PNG, JPG, or GIF format.
Animated emojis must be in GIF format.
The recommended image size is 128x128 pixels.
Edit/Resize the Image (Optional): Use an image editing tool (such as Photoshop, Canva, or any online image resizer) to resize the image to 128x128 pixels if it isn’t already. Discord will automatically resize it, but it’s good practice to upload it at the correct dimensions.
Step 2: Open Discord and Go to Server Settings
Open Discord (either the desktop app or web version).
Select the Server where you want to add custom emojis from the server list on the left.
Click on the server name at the top of the channel list to open a drop-down menu.
From the drop-down, click on Server Settings.
Step 3: Add Custom Emojis
In the server settings menu, select the Emoji tab from the left-hand sidebar.
Click the Upload Emoji button.
A file browser will open—select the image file for your custom emoji.
Once uploaded, you can:
Rename the emoji (optional) by editing the text in the “Alias” field.
Emojis must have unique names within the server, and they cannot contain spaces. Use underscores (_) instead of spaces if needed.
Step 4: Use Your Custom Emojis
To use your newly added custom emoji, type
:
followed by the name of the emoji. For example, if your emoji is namedparty_parrot
, typing:party_parrot:
will display the emoji.Alternatively, you can click the emoji icon in the chat box and scroll through the custom emojis to select one.
Additional Tips:
Animated Emojis: You can upload animated (GIF) emojis, but only Discord Nitro users will be able to use them across different servers.
Server Boosting: Server boosts can increase the number of custom emoji slots available in the server. The more boosts a server has, the more emojis it can have.
Troubleshooting:
If you can’t upload an emoji, check your permissions. You need the “Manage Emojis” permission.
File Size Limit: The maximum file size for emoji uploads is 256 KB.
Name Conflicts: If two emojis have the same name, Discord will prevent the second one from being uploaded until you rename it.
By following these steps, you should be able to easily upload and use custom emojis in your Discord server!
